Attached was the latest info from the loaded dice Green fraternity ruling the so called independent Kosciuszko National Park Wild Horse Management Plan.
It reminds one of a CON-vened “Royal Commission” – only when the right commissioner is selected with terms of reference set to establish the required findings that suit the hidden agenda.
Remember: “If you play by their rules – YOU LOSE”
Ginini peats estimated 3200+ years old cared for by committed Aboriginal cool fire, dingo suppression, multicultural stockmen restoring big animal activity continued cool fire care with their little Brumby mobs, passing sheep and cattle, safe in 1939 heat wave fires, Cotter travelling stock stopped 1969 Snow Leases stopped also at this time to build soil cons mountains of mulch, 100% ground cover of rank tussock 10+ tonnes per hectare flammable toxic dead gum litter to bury wildflowers value adding those placed in the museum. Build the bonfire with scrub, industrial strength gadget fire suppression for the pyronoid ripping off the water bounty, legacy of Brumby and bushmen’s toil.
Without trial or jury, unarmed Brumby massacred finally 1987 for ‘pig roots,’ RAMSAR declared 45th 1996, burnt, under cut 2003, first time in living memory left vulnerable abandoned by wilderness fanatics. A grand hoax. Canberra plunged into water crisis and restrictions first time ever. ACT foresters, bushmen made redundant 2001 taking with them 500 years of local knowledge on summer storm behaviour. Stoked for decades, watched by the world via satellite, the 2003 inferno incinerated 160000 hectares in 4 hours world record intensity blowing in to suburbs 500+ homes burnt 4 people, caged dogs, cats, wallaby, koala, millions of birds, lizards, insects, frogs, fish, possum. Pooles and Pryors exotic arboretum punished for obstruction. The Ginini Brumby had gone. Ginini flats are haunted by their murder. Dead ghost gums moan and grieve their loss in the wind.
Next door the Brumby, travelling cattle grazed green the Upper Murrumbidgee was fire safe 200000 hectares. Now Canberra’s new water source to burn one dry summer when the bonfire rebuilds the mountains of mulch. Pay back for defying climate changing fires in 2003, boffins now want to protect their “anti graze anti burn science” in dingo infested forests, demand ‘Bidgee Brumbies exterminated. Value add more endangered species captive breeding programs. Public funded for policy failure. Fly in fly out frogs not yet eaten by their dogs. Canberra water costs more slaughter for their bath water. High society drink bottled water Brumby fire fighters die for naught after they are caught. Deceived by gifts of salt delivered by more betrayal.
Brumbies have been welcome to roam freely across the high country for up to 190 years achieving much appreciated ecoservices while producing work horses as required. In 1987 the horses were shot to rot by sniper fire, their bodies dumped in NSW, it was claimed for ‘pig roots’ or diggings their crime, as the politically corrected term goes tampering with the Australian vernacular goes with theft of land and as cultural heritage seems to go. While Snowy stockmen were away at war for the second time (1914-18) then (1939-45) the people calling themselves environmentalists made their run to confiscate the mountains build their careers at the ski resorts on the basis of “potential threats” and unsubstantiated conjecture they called “science” or precautionary principle.
Canberra like Sydney was sited because of the high quality water available. Clean sweet, running off snowy mountains and summer thunderstorms. Lightly carbon filtered and alpine herb infused. Honed by large herds of visiting big native animals for millions of years, then Aboriginal cool proactive fire mimicked the big animals to retain the ideal fire safe vegetation, the Aboriginal suppression of the introduced dingo aggressively exterminating the mainland tiger, devil and now the quoll among other wildlife species abandoned to massive packs of these dangerous and savage killers chomping through the regions grazing animals to appease the ‘wilderness worshipers’ and water engineers of maximal water sale profits at the cost of the ecology. The stockmen black, white and brindle restored the big animals, cool burnt, removed the dogs restored adequate mixed species grazing to produce the worlds finest water rain, snow, run off and seepage. The cool fires are no longer possible in big animal prepared vegetation ideally spaced to cool the fires any weather.
All that is left at Ginini flats is the ghosts of the Brumby mobs that tended the area. Haunted among the fire killed snow gums or as some say, ghost gums too. Fire killed trees and animals vaporised by the millions. There are no leaves on the trees, birds to sing, the wind howls a mournful farewell to what once was. Bountiful, wildflowers of every colour and shape waving a welcome to all who came, are fond memories of the old folk dismissed as uneducated by blow in boffins that have never witnessed such a scene or are told it ever existed. They have been ‘weaned on wilderness’ lifeless solitude for those fleeing the dysfunctional artificial city they know of nothing truthful.
Once there were insects, frogs, birds, lizards, broad tooth rats by the many, possum, gliders, wallaby, wombat, kangaroo with joey in the pouch, echidna in the knowledge their pups were safe rolled in leaf nests dreaming of mum’s return. There is none in the streets, there is now none in the city water catchment once called ‘the bush’ politically corrected and disinfected, heat sterilised in fact to save a corporate zac or ‘quick quid’ on what boffins pay for bath water, now drinking water comes in plastic bottles and the Brumby die for naught. Senseless slaughter, for cheap city water.
The vista is very changed, rank tussock, dead trees over hanging an angry regrowth of few fire hardy species. The next holocaust manoeuvres into position to appease some science fiction commissioned to be complicit.
They want the mountains dead for their cheap city water, cheap alpine holidays. They want our heritage horses dead for defying the climate change mythology. Grazed green Brumby runs were fire safe under the challenge of industrial strength mountains of mulch set to burn the forests, the rivers, the soil, the possum, the frogs and fish, the birds and insects. Gone for what? ‘Grazed green’ lawns around the pretty peoples palaces where they produce the propaganda.
The ghost gums are haunted with our Brumbies blood. Mad men want the mountains all dead so they may have water to their multimillion dollar mansions. The Brumby Ghosts of Ginni know the truth. Why the bogs were burnt as never before possible. Who did deliberately build the bonfire empire to save a zac on water from your tap.
They confiscated the high country made promises they would look after it better than the bushmen that took their horses to defend king and country. Those bushwalkers that couldn’t ride or communicate with good horse’s honesty, stayed at home were committed to conserving their careers. Built bonfire empires.
They want the mountains all dead. Send our Brumbies to slaughter for their cheap city water. Breed more killer dogs on Brumby bones. Is this the Australia our Snowy stockmen fought for all those years ago with their tireless Brumbies with them all the way. ‘Bill the Bastard,’ Ned and Nell pounding their way through hell. The sniper fire has not finished or the blood lust of mad men yet diminished.
Ginini, headwaters of Canberra water, is haunted ever after by Brumby ghosts, injustice and needless slaughter. Out of every tap in town now flows ‘Bidgee Brumby blood. Where to next Canberra, when you burn these dead Brumby runs? ‘Climate change’ indeed you deceitful bloody rogues.
“These sites had been taken out of grazing almost as soon as the Kosciuszko legislation was passed, so they were already protected from the main disturbing agent. But I found that in the few years since I first saw them the amount of degradation had increased incredibly!”
Maybe check on the assumptions eh!
Look elsewhere for the real ‘disturbed agent.’

FREEDOM OF SPEECH DENIED YET AGAIN
By Noeline Franklin B Sc (Hons), PTC, M Med Sc
Recent NSW Government & National Parks engineered consultation with the general public on Brumby management in Kosciuszko is another slick orchestrated sham among the gang green beneficiaries for the ideal life in the resorts, swilling wine, cheese boards, rack of lamb, roast beef, rice and fresh salad, fruit platters. Farmer’s product over which the conversation excludes the rural minority wishes and heritage is betrayed yet again.
The country people are forced to witness their forests avoidably burnt down, irrigation farmers bypassed for water being used to flush Canberra’s toilet out to the Murray River lower lakes with water called “environmental flows” designed for diluting the pollutants and salt. The meagre drippings off expanses of dead and dysfunctional vegetation on the incinerated Snowy Alps chronically neglected by incompetent, inactive, indecisive boffins and bureaucrats paid highly to deceitfully administer policy failure.
With trotters in the trough, water and hydro electricity deals are done in the smoky back rooms among the money men of politics taking off the people the catchment and water. If any water runs off the burnt killed forests, this diminished water supply may be sold back to a select and exclusive few Australians. Perhaps even corporatised up for grabs internationally.
The only inferno respite our rivers and biodiversity had during the last decades man made alpine fires was on the few grazed green Brumby runs defiant of so called climate change. The rest of the alps predictably were cremated by the bonfire built lovingly over decades which incinerated the forest, bogs and alpine plains as nature would never previously allow.
Industrial gadgetry such as aeroplanes helicopters fire trucks in the dehabited man made wilderness suppressed the cool fire smoke from ruining the commercial tourist vista. The legislative stupidity manipulating who can make smoke dreamed up on the seaside taking ownership of smoke production for the cities benefit being paramount over any cost long term to the environment which pays for being locked up to burn by being denied cool fire or grazing animal services for decades. No logs, firewood, no grass mown except around the resorts and tourist props for paying customers. ‘University ski club’ cronies made up of lawyers, journalists, water engineers, bushwalking bureaucrats boffins undertake drunken and wilderness weed assisted orgies designed to entertain the public land management policy makers for clarity of thought and ecological insight.
These same people are frightened by a Brumby stallion snort of disgust at intrusion and campers crappe on his grazing runs. For this defiance of ‘climate changing’ fires by grazing vegetation, Brumby are declared criminals by the ‘shape of their feet,’ production of Brumby buns so are sentenced to death by firing squad for defying ‘climate changing intense fire with their grazed green runs being made fire safe and water remaining surprisingly clean and sweet compared to incinerated destocked grazing runs reduced to eroding expanses of soot and sediment drifts, the vegetation fire deformed.
Pyronoid and poo-ranoid city raised people find Brumby buns confronting. They want them gone not knowing of their essential Eco-services provided or the heritage connections for many people. The “textperts” hunt globally on public funding looking for ‘alternative energies’ as they sit by allowing hard hoof hating fanatics butcher mercilessly the nations working horses, donkey, camel, water buffalo who turn out natural Eco-services. Aggressively these “Pamphlet Professors” lay claim to big animal biodiversity produced lawns for their tourist empire as they sanction to destroy the very mechanism that pumped life into their commercialised “tourist ecology.”
Commissioned science research junket on the public payroll massaged through government vested interests to legitimise their mismanagement as judged by its outcomes of degradation symptomatic of species loss, big fire destruction, culture of exclusion for the financial groupie elite.
More man made fires, mass extinction events, ever growing the ‘species obituary list,’ water shortages, dead forests fire killed as far as the eye can see, Canberra, Melbourne, Upper Murray catchment, rendered dysfunctional with all other native forests being prepared bonfires waiting for the correct circumstance of drought and extreme weather to explode gushing fire ember showers.
Snow gum down to river red gum all set to burn to cinders so high society can live the life of the affluent maintaining transport and energy inefficiencies while the forests are denied essential grazing, logging or cool fire control for fear of competing carbon emissions or smoke to mar the commercial wilderness tourist vista.
Rural and historic knowledge of avoiding catastrophe has been kept out of the Ministers office by ‘controlled minders’ ably assisted by a very greedy and deceitful media misinforming the Australian public. Scientists that see this alternative view, have data sets to support their conclusions and have a conscience vote are sidelined in funding for their research if not personally vilified, bullied, harassed forced away from their work. This is how consensus has been manufactured through the complicit academic dynasty.
With no opposing evidence supporting Brumbies that are in fact more beneficial in their activities than detrimental, this evidence continues to be suppressed and denied collection, denied media attention who have investments in resorts, plantation forests, and the public façade to have equal consultation from independent consultants apart from ex-staff of soil con, national park or tea room wallflower researchers frequenting the canteen for conversations to maintain the empire, then our heritage wild horses will be made extinct without representation. Another kangaroo court arranged by groupies for groupies.
The lack of snow and rainfall directly contributed to incinerated dead forests or dense monoculture regrowth blissfully setting the next inferno in place by doing nothing and obstructing others capable doing anything to prevent another mass extinction process from occurring is a national disgrace.
Without doubt Australian rural minorities are the multicultural families and communities with the most experience capable in dealing with land and water management putting a protective shell over the nation’s environmental assets against the colonial exploited forces extracting city water at the environments cost, cutting down cedar forests for export, taking and eating all beach life, ripping up fire tracks that are no longer accessible, mining all our coal and minerals exported with indecent haste at a pittance return, denied value adding by future generations.
Rural communities historic evidence show they have been into renewable agricultural production among the native wildlife, leaving patches of bush, working their herds and flocks along the stock routes in a manner biodiversity benefits until the experts arrived from universities adopting the American antisocial environmentalist view where humans can do nothing for the environment but visit, pay gate fees, the motel, the eatery, and take photos in this ecological artifact wilderness they have created from myth-information.
Now we see our once pristine heritage locked up and denied Eco-services of cool fire to mar the vista with smoke, manage big animal grazing, selectively thin the forest such it regenerates and stays fire safe.
Universities are paid for research in such a away that what was called ‘science’ is now an orchestrated artifact only designed to support the popular and politically correct profitable view, not much to do with what the environment wants or needs in reality, to be sustainable.
What happens in the thing created by bushwalking clubs from the city is all about “little me.” The cheap water to sell, the city carbon off set, the low cost public land maximal profit no expenditure on doing nothing management sucking off the legacy of past management until it is extinguished, elitism exclusion, behind the locked gates and uniformed enforcer controllers policing your wilderness experience. Observing the progress of chaos and anarchy, vegetation over growth, the fear of another out of control inferno to bring about more wildlife extinction, establish more weed introductions under the noses of the indolent, rabbits feeding, packs of killer dogs, foxes, cats, pigs to help each other destroy more native plant and animal species. Orchid corms, lizards, frogs insects, wildlife butchered, starved and burnt in unsustainable numbers beyond capacity to regenerate and persist through the imposts of adversity.
The camping areas and visitor centres are peppered with wildlife rescues salvaged for tourist props from ‘road kill’ to give false impressions all is well in National Parks but a quick tour beyond this Hollywood production and facade reveals the backdrop of vast canopy burn and desolation of a once thriving attractive public land.
By their own admission the anti-grazing lobby observed but did not acknowledge the only inferno safe areas were the grazed green Brumby runs, the still active cattlemen’s runs.
Alpine bogs chronically denied big animal activity or cool fire, burnt as never before possible in Soil Cons mountains of mulch lovingly accumulated for decades of indolence partying at the ski resorts on the public expense with the long term cost on your environment. Brumby pugs propagate frogs.
When Brumby are exterminated the frogs who enjoy their pugs (foot print holes to live and breed in) will slowly die out from unviable habitat they now install man made plastic pugs to simulate the Brumby pug not to mention the failing controlled breeding workshop program that fly frogs to these plastic pugs which are nothing short of a frog starving death camp.
On the 10th August 2009, SOS-NEWS received a letter from a person wishing to be known as “Boo Boo” who had read one of our stories on the shooting of Brumbies at Thredbo with high powered rifles. Deciding to become a whistle blower quoted, “I am in a vulnerable position to retaliatory action from NSW National Parks” and request to be anonymous in any publications”.
Our investigators have confirmed important information contained in “Boo Boo’s” first letter and all subsequent letters along with several other whistle blowers information compiled in our extensive database.
From “Boo Boos” letters we followed up one interesting item with a freedom of information disclosure that a now retired manager of the lower snowy National Parks, held a “Commissioners Permit”(NSW Police Commissioner) for multiple 7.65mm NATO caliber Browning Automatic military assault rifles (BAR), and in the balance of probabilities the licensed transferred to another NP public servant.
The question here;
“why the hell National Parks would need fully automatic military assault rifles when farmers effectively use bolt action .223 rifles for shooting feral wild dogs, goats & pigs plus euthanaising large livestock like horses & cattle”?
Just a few hypothetical’s during 2009 and prior to ponder.
If we were to suggest hypothetically;
Two old brumbies that lived on the lower slopes of Mt Janungal for many years in the 90’s and were accustom to hikers and fishermen seeking out campers who had the pleasure of their company were executed.
Two Kosciusko National Park staffers acting under management instructions to shoot these two tame brumbies near Mt Janungal that also involved an RSPCA person.
That this was not for humane purposes but for NSW National Parks opening of the rebuilt O’Keefe’s Hut to tourist.
That the presence of tame friendly wild horses and no sign of horse damaging the environment did not suit that area National Parks management personal agenda along with the Greenies agenda to have all our wild brumbies shot.
That careful timing of the shooting was just before winter limiting the chance of the shattered bodies being found before wild dogs, snow and time destroyed the evidence……... or did it?
Would you be upset?
If we were to suggest hypothetically;
That just outside the Kosciusko Marangle State Forest (with much having been handed over to National Parks) brumby wild horses were shot down in groups under a hail of heavy caliber automatic rifle fire.
Such weapons requiring police commissioner approval.
Would you be upset?
If we were to suggest hypothetically;
That horse riders appeared on a ridge in Kosciusko National Park while parks were aerial shooting training on goats and were driven off by the helicopter along with ground rangers who just happened to be there.
That reports received suggested loud automatic heavy gunfire was heard before the chase which took 4 hours costing many thousands of dollars, then the subsequent kangaroo court case and more dollars.
That wild horse numbers in that area were quietly reduced from weeks of this “Goat Shooting”.
Would you be upset?
A once silenced and controlled public now seek clarity outside the media and government box of tricks, there is more to come.

Stop the slaughter and eradication of the Snowy Mountains Brumby and reinstate access for horse riders to all areas of the Kosciuszko National Park
Petition by: Richard Roberts, Australia
I’m sure I don’t need to highlight the national symbolism of the Australian Brumby in particular those the roam the high country and have done for over 150 years they were immortalised in The Man From Snowy River, they helped us to build (and defend) the nation we call home, they carried us through wars and are the last symbolism of freedom in Australia.
However, there are a minority in this country with extreme views that they should be eradicated from the Kosciusko National Park (KNP) by all means necessary including helicopter culling these groups are headed mainly by the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and are supported by the ALP, the Greens, the Colong Foundation, the ANU, Fenner School and the Wilderness society and various national parks associations (ACT, NSW and VIC).
I don’t need to remind you of the (very justified) public outcry of the events in 2000 in the Guy Fawkes National Park, when the NPWS under the Australian Labour Party (ALP) at the time butchered 600+ horses (and at the behest of the Colong Foundation in particular whose patrons have been and are Neville Wran and Bob Carr).
Sickening footage of this event can be located easily on the internet, showing horses with their teeth blown out, mares shot dead while foaling and other horses with bullet riddle bodies, it was nothing less than a massacre and an event of international embarrassment and disgrace at the time when Australia had just again immortalised the Man From Snowy River and the Brumbies to an international audience at the Sydney 2000 Olympics.
These wild horses are now an essential part of the ecosystem of the high country, they are not predators and have little to no negative environmental impacts as opposed to the wild dog and pig populations of which seem to get little attention from the NPWS.
They have become a massive tourist attraction for those from the city and internationally that watched movies such as the Man from Snowy River and read books such as the silver brumby series when they were kids.
We hold Banjo Patterson in the highest regard in this country for his literary work and skills in putting into poetry the world he lived in and the places he saw. It’s a shame we don’t hold such places and iconic symbols in the same regard to protect the culture of European Australia, as I fear in years to come all that the great achievements of the settlers of this country and the horses that took them there will be completely forgotten and a way of life reduced to another poem in a library or a video on “youtube” to show the next generation what it was once like.
America has protected its mustangs (wild horses) in all National Parks in America because of their symbolism to the nation and unlike Australia they haven’t been allowed to send them to slaughter when they are no longer required as the NPWS are currently insistent on doing in the KNP.
Please help stop this disastrous program and allow the brumbies to live, it’s now our turn to protect them, as they carried on their backs 3 generations of proud Australians during 3 different wars and built this nation we love, don’t allow them to be sent to slaughter because of some extreme left green views, stand up for what is Australian and the brumby is certainly that, before we lose the little things we have left that tie us to those that were here before.

From meetings in Tumut between NSW National Parks, represented by ranger Rob Gibbs confronting a very concerned public over parks culling of our heritage horses on the Snowy, were informed by Gibbs, “if it was up to me I would get rid of ALL the Brumbies” obviously the right person to carry the loaded dice to a public meeting he was conducting as a “Public Servant”. He appears quite capable of clicking his heels together before the goose step walk akin to most enforcers.
Should there be any doubt of this blatant bias reflecting the personal vendetta Gibbs carries to oversee extermination of our Brumbies from his position managing the horse management plan, we have included a taxpayer funded video of Gibbs quoting from what could be described as a “Green’s book of Factual Engineering” (the bureaucrats bible), this time making claims the broad tooth rat or bush rat is being destroyed by the Brumby when in fact the rat clings to the few remaining activities of the Brumby as the last big grazer. When the Brumby go the last of the rats once common, are likely to go as is biodiversity of both plants animals frogs, possum, insects wildflowers…… starved for commercial water sales.
After viewing this video, read Noeline Franklin’s findings reflecting not only a scientific view but undertaking generational and regional research.

BUSHMEN, BRUMBIES & BROAD TOOTH RATS
Noeline Franklin B Sc (Hons), PTC, M Med Sc. Farmer/Scientist
After the big migratory animal mobs have all but been removed from our Snowy Mountains with exception for a few little herds of Brumby, biodiversity has all but been lost.
Starved, butchered or burnt is the usual fate in a thing called national park, wilderness, city water catchment in Australia interpreted as being an exclusive bushwalking soot, smoke, pooh free, big animal free venue for the university greenhouse raised elite.
These people are demanding the wilderness experience bashing their way between the vacant bird perches once live and ancient trees. These trees were also once also home to possum, gliders, lizards, insects and native rodents that in the past were in such abundance they were a nuisance for bushmen forced to share their horse riding and pack equipment with the night visits chewing greased and salty leather by what is now called the ‘broad tooth rat’ (once these were called bush rats). The new management has to announce their winning the political war by name changes ‘cultural refit to citify the language’ for simpletons. ‘Pigroots’ to ‘pig ripping’ politically corrected for the children apparently, when pig ripping used to mean pig tusk inflicting injury to people dogs etc. not pigs digging up orchid corms for a meal washed down with Corroboree frog and broad tooth rat pups.
In the old days when not intercepted by squadrons of dingo and pig, fox hunting accomplices abandoned to fight it out to the last rat standing, these rats grew quite large on the bounty of drovers and bushmen’s food, their soap, horse feed, canvas and hemp containers were fair go for night raids by the locals. For light sleepers the rats in the rafters of every hut was a joy of the mountains. A camp fire was a rats delight in the approaching winter when they were fat enough after the summer grazing, to carry away a full cake of soap if not the metal soap saver headed for the hills or banging up the verandah post. The soap disappearances in the night, rats making a nest in the fishing tackle box are not required since the dingo packs have hoovered up the rats, the possum, glider, echidna, platypus, wallaby, roos, wallaroos, wombat, any emu.
The horror bushfires have roared through the mountains of mulch soil con engineered evenly from Canberra to Melbourne connecting up the university greenhouses that brought the spoils of a European and townie education to the high country to incinerate it as never before possible. Any broad tooth rat caught off a Brumby run at the time would have met their maker. Fire fighters tell stories of entire mountainsides engulfed in flames. Birds, lizards, possum, rodents paid dearly for the dingo delivered no graze policies and industrial strength fire suppression that built the bonfire fuel for decades for a spiritual mass cremation in the wilderness. Some salvation a Claytons salvation even. A few wet gullies made safe in 1939 blew into the stratosphere 2003-9 by soil con rocket fuel. Fantastic scientific experiment grand finale similar to the multimillion dollar fire works blowing up the harbour bridge for the Olympics as the end of the Guy Fawkes Brumbies was plotted by the clandestine city based political activists. Miffed at the stockhorse opening scene of the Olympics being so popular. The industrialists wanted it to be the last charge into Beersheba.
The Snowy drovers and stockmen sheep and cattle dogs on the chain for the night tied to bushes and tussocks around the hut and camp to sleep off the days events, restore their sore feet and hoarse voices, would be fascinated by the night invasion of bush rats for the first week or fortnight if they were new to the job but after that they and the battalions bush rats got along well. Every hut had wire hanging off the beams and verandahs off which to hang your saddle bridle pack saddle, your pack bags full of tucker the soap was rescued every night by the last one taking a sponge. The possum and the rats used to fight over the gift of universal Sunlight soap. May Gibbs or Memfox could have written a delightful book about the consequences of eating stolen soap for the bushrats and possum field officers.
To go to the high country today the “silence and solitude” desired by the Sydney Bushwalking Club and the national parks, the milo dumplings for their stolen wilderness has been granted pretty much in full. The soap is safe from the bushrats and the possum, there are no skinks by the creeks to enjoy the bread crumbs from your sandwich out of the saddlebag, few minnow in the creeks to give bread crumbs too either, hardly a frog in 100s of kilometres. They have died out waiting in vain for a cow pat to hide under and eat through ‘til the winter hibernation. The creeks are turned into drains today running lank oily black water draining between the rank tussock, tree scrub and a bit further down in the wilderness the blackberry bush begins and is a delight for fishermen. Water never sees the sun until it pops out at Yanga station for the 26 x 70 kilometre black water fish kill. The blackbury bush ripping the rear vision mirrors off your vehicle, doing the paintwork more of a mischief than ten years work in the supermarket car park swopping paint with the trolleys.
You can drive for many miles (bush rats work in miles they were gone about the time decimal measurements came in) of a night through the mountains and never see a rodent cross the track. In the old days you needed to make an appointment to travel at night to deal with the competition from the wildlife. Wallaby, roo, owls, frogs, rodents, wombats, ‘scientific transects and infrared spy cameras’ not required or the package deal with the greenhouse boffins on a paid bush adventure to generate propaganda data sets correlating Brumby buns with broad tooth rat business cards. There were plenty to see and quantify close enough as “lots.” ‘Rare’ was how described your not so cooked steak. ‘Threatened’ was how you saw a thunderstorm coming and no raincoat tied on the saddle.
IF- you can find a place to walk through public land bush these days you may need a torch as there are few lights to shine back at you unless it’s the ski resorts or the city using all that hydroelectricity before the ‘use by date expires’ when the water engineers dams finally go dry in the canopy burn. The bush is silent and dead today by comparison to the old days of the grazing era experts never lose an opportunity to sling off about. Biodiversity has different ideas as it clings to the Brumby runs made fire safe and where the old stallions chase the dingo out of the area to protect his foals and mares trying to get a sleep. The bush rats the odd remaining roo or wallaby follow the Brumbies for safety. The unburnt bogs are where the Brumby have been in big enough numbers to make a difference to the vegetation retaining the big animal lawns of the grazing era. Generally the snow plains and flats are closing in with a tangle of scrub. With this closure the last remaining feeding areas for many native animals is gone. Small animals are stuck because they cannot vacate to new open feeding grounds were there are still wildflowers, insects, water and other necessities of life.
The ecology is collapsing or in many cases collapsed. Soil CON has taken a few decades to kill off species that have survived prospered and adapted to change for millions of years. In the last 20 million years of adapting to dry and increased fire proneness there were big animal mobs of marsupial roaming around doing the vegetation management spacing the trees, the shrubs, trampling the bark, twigs, leaves ready for a cool burn to detoxify the litter for the soil, the water take the heat out of the drought summer fire lit by dry storm lightening. Small patches were burnt in any one time avoiding a mass extinction event otherwise delivered by townies and globe trotting experts that chose to ignore local knowledge and repeated warnings the wisdom of experience generated by bushmen for up to 60,000 years, best guess, of how far back bushmen have watched events in Australia. Told their children, told their friends who listened and watched, showed some respect for beautiful Snowy. What Snowy needed not what the blow-ins wanted of Snowy.
Bushmen worked out that bushrats, cool fires, big animals all fitted in doing things for each other. Bushmen knew their obligations how best to fit in with the ebb and flow of life in the mountains the coast, the inland. Bush rats had it worked out as well. Bushmen turned on the TV every day, every night for months years generations and watched the ‘local soapy.’ There wasn’t a silent camp fire for too many antisocial gatherings where nothing was said exchanging observations and thoughts to drown out the sound of the camping stock, the owls, the clink of hobble chains on the weary horses, the rattle of the creek across the rapids. Squeeking gum trees and the rattle of the leaves and candle bark blowing down for kindling to kick the bushrats fire together so they could sleep off the night raids to the fallen grain where the horses were fed. Bushmen’s activities enlivened the alps bringing in grain, salt, big animal activity to tramp and manure, clear spaces for wildflower and annual grass seed to prosper. Feed bounty for the bushrats to supplement their soap diet, the stolen grain, saddle flap leather, the bridle chewed and grazed with broad tooth marks and the business card left as a sign of sense of humour for the new stockmen to the game or the enthusiastic called to share a rum by the fire before the day was done.
Salvation of the Snowy by the city boffins and water salesmen has been bitter sweet for the bush. The thing that has morphed into the broad tooth rat from bush rat is clinging to the few Brumby runs, fire and relatively dingo safe as the old stallions maintain energy to chase the dogs away from their flats, grazed green lawns. The wildflower and viable grass seed also clings to these few remaining “viable habitats” to use the foreign language the school children have been indoctrinated with. In the old days it was good bush, the rubbish cleaned up and tidy and was not a novelty because everyone was obliged to return favours for services rendered.
Australian mateship included the bush on the list and high up in priority. Bush rats voted with their feet. They sort out the huts where people lit campfires to keep them warm. They bought them seed from the low country, bread and flour were laid on, they grazed the area and cool burnt other areas to revitalise the plants to produce seed for rats as the Aboriginal and giant marsupial had done before them dating back the 4+ million years rodents have been in Australia all 69 species of them that have arisen in that time. Experts have with their bad advice to government, all but killed them off within a few years. The Brumby and sheep cattle did not do that. Starvation, dingo, fox, cat, pig, have hunted them down, big uncontrollable large area hot fires have incinerated the rats, mice, possum, the food, their tree hollows, log and tussock nests cooked over vast areas as never before possible. The Brumby runs were the few remaining fire safe havens.
Big animals create habitat. The ignorant and closed minds were too blinded to see this reality and put in their propaganda sheets “the rats are squashed by big introduced animals” (bushwalkers exempt) “out competing native species for food.” Wrong much to the loss of native species denied cool fire and big animal activity in a lethal combination to bring about mass extinction via stagnation and starvation before the inferno or the dingo has the last say or before the ABC journo shoots from the hip primed by the university greenhouse indoctrination process. The objectivity of their $1.3 billion annual grant from the Australian tax payer doled out by a government that wants to hear the good news for cheap water sales at the environments expense and not have criticism of government policies in managing public assets, rorted to produce the water monopoly for the people. Privatised for the executive to leave the public service to free enterprise executive, liberated to commercial in confidence packages bonuses for indecision deep voices in pinstriped suits, tailored in Hong Kong last stop over. The loud tie cuff links and kojack hair job.
It is a serious tragic miscarriage of justice and townie ignorance to send Brumby to slaughter or aerial shoot them because the now “rare and threatened species” cling to their Brumby runs. The bush rat (broad tooth) soap eating rat, is being consigned to oblivion by fanatical zealots driven by visions of ethnic genocide and water profits, career promotions or what ever bribe is being made important to them. The corroboree, alpine, poddlebonk, baw baw……. frogs, the pygmy possum, leadbeater possum, sugar gliders, dunnarts, atechnicus, bandicoot, bettong, quolls are all facing extinction as are the insects, fungi, birds, lizards, alpine native grasses wildflowers, many flowering shrubs, gum trees of various genetic selections and adaptations.
Bushmen are disgusted at the hollow promise of looking after Snowy for future generations.
Already tourists are coming to the region viewing the devastation, mass extinction events and moving to a new venue that does not have vast man made deciduous forests. People calling themselves “naturalists” are getting on aeroplanes with their paying guests and going to other countries to see their ecologies. Once Australia had ever green forests, shelter for big animals, small animals to feed through the snow season in sheltered areas of the timber. Fire affected deciduous forests created by experts and globe trotting boffins are lethal for any remarkable survivors big or small as they try to recolonise. Climate change has been man made. “Potential threats and damage of any grazing era” boffin beat up has been delivered beyond any expectations by experts denying grazing, cool fire, dingo removal or the pigs, foxes, cats that scavenge the rabbits and resort rubbish tips. Drovers black, white and brindle came to the NSW mountains from the 1820s to 1970s. 150 years of restoring big animal activity saw the high country revitalise combined with Aboriginal cool fire designed to mimic and complement big mob activity. The water sweet and clean, wildflowers everywhere every colour, the forests alive and fire safe. Trees many 100s of years old. Stately elders sheltering the rats, possum, wombats the horses, in their experienced arms resisting the winds, the snow, the cold. These have been heat sterilised even handedly by the millions of hectares. Snow gum, mountain plum pine, alpine ash,
Bushmen stand in wonder it could all be destroyed in just a few decades from doing nothing and not letting anyone else do anything to stop it from happening. The experts know best eh! Let the Brumby die, kill the rest no longer welcome to provide ecoservices to the remaining remnant populations of rats, mice, frogs, possum, bird, wildflower. The endangered species industry is too lucrative. Sales of ancient photographs and drawings value added. Chance specimens sent off to zoos and museums stuffed exhibits. Stuffed kids toys for sale. Merchandised memories.
Bushmen and bushrats thank the Brumbies for those extra few years and may they all rest in peace.
This hostile greedy dishonest world is no place to be at present until we fix it.
The Australian Brumby perish in the collapsed high country ecology, there are too few of them to bring back a fire safe forest before it is too late. The mountains are dying as the bushmen despair under gross ignorance that is killing it and our loyal horses, their friends, the bushrats, the mountain possum, made threatened and rare now gain notoriety on the SPECIES OBITUARY LIST.
